Queen Elizabeth National Park

Queen Elizabeth National Park

Overview

The Queen Elizabeth National Park is highly regarded and is one of the most outstanding of Uganda's national parks. Overflowing with wildlife, this territory is surrounded by the high slopes of the Rwenzoris in the north, extending along the shores of Lake Edward in the west, reaching the remote region of Ishasha in the south. The overall impression is one of wide ranging diversity: green savannah with acacia and euphorbia trees, giving way to lakes and marshes, all framed by the snow-capped peaks of the Mountains of the Moon. With more than 57 types of vegetation these zones can be categorised into five main groups: backwoods, prairies, grassy thickets, Acacia forest and wetlands. Moreover, the park is home to a great variety of mammals and the most significant number of bird species, making it a birders dream destination.

Wildlife in the national park includes elephants, bison, Ugandan kobs, waterbuck, warthogs, giant forest pigs, lions, leopards and hyenas. On the shores of the Kazinga Channel you will experience large groups of hippopotamus and a few crocodiles. Topis are found in the southern sector of the park, while a range primates can be seen in the Kyambura Wildlife Reserve and Maramagambo Forest.
