Parc Nacional Volcans

Overview

Located in the northwest of Rwanda, the Volcanoes National Park is perched on the lofty slopes of this wonderful range and is home to the much loved but also highly endangered mountain gorillas. With a rich mosaic of montane biological systems, the park contains evergreen and bamboo timberland, open prairie, bogs and heathlands. The Volcanoes National Park is named after the chain of extinct volcanoes making up the Virunga Massif: Karisimbi – the most noteworthy at 4,507m, Bisoke with its verdant carter lake, Sabinyo, Gahinga and Muhabura. As its name suggests this zone is both volcanic and rugged, representing a one of a kind eco-framework that is home to some unique wildlife as well as presenting some dazzling vistas. The Volcanoes National Park is well known for gorilla trekking, enabling you to experience gorillas close at hand for a truly unforgettable encounter. There are 11 habituated gorilla families in the park where you might meet – Susa, Amahoro, Sabyinyo, Uganda, Hirwa, Umubano or Karisimbi, are just some examples of the characters who might cross your path, while on the trek. In spite of the fact that gorilla trekking hogs the spotlight, don't pass up the opportunity to also seek out the highly endangered Golden Monkeys which you might also experience whilst trekking through the forests. A vast assortment of birds, about 178 species in total, some of them endemic to the Virunga preservation zone and the incomparable Ruwenzori Mountains can also be spotted along with numerous reptiles, and other creatures that inhabit this magical kingdom of fantastic flora and fauna.
