Masai Mara National Reserve

Masai Mara National Reserve

Masai Mara National Park is a champion among most travellers’ destinations in Kenya. The Park is situated in the Great Rift Valley, an open prairie with wildlife mostly centered around the Park’s western edge. The Masai Mara is seen as the pearl of Kenya's wildlife areas. The annual wildebeest movement, otherwise known as The Great Migration, incorporates over 1.5 million animals arriving in July and leaving in November.

There are around 95 kinds of mammals and reptiles and in excess of 400 winged species recorded in the area. It is the richest area in Africa for wildlife and visitors are almost guaranteed to see the Big Five.

The Mara is a wonderland for wildlife enthusiasts. Exceptional gatherings of elephant roam among the rich tree-studded glades, as does an occasional solitary rhino. Thomson's and Grant's gazelle, topi and eland offer a rich menu for the prevalent predators of lion, jaguar and cheetah that live here. In the Mara River, hippos submerge at the approach of a vehicle, just to surface seconds later to snort and make their presence known. Crocodiles sunbathe on the riverbanks, mouths agape, awaiting unsuspecting prey which they will snap with lightning speed. The Masai and their livestock, which are protected by a boma, live in harmony with the wildlife.
